EMERGENCY ULTRASOUND

Emergency ultrasound is a new and growing field in emergency medicine. The Emergency Department at UMass Memorial Medical Center (UMMMC) performs nearly 9,000 ultrasound examinations each year and the UMass Medical School (UMMS) Department of Emergency Medicine offers a one-year fellowship to train board certified emergency physicians in the integration of bedside ultrasound into the practice of emergency medicine.

BASIC EDUCATION

BASIC RESEARCH

The Emergency Ultrasound faculty at UMMS include nationally recognized experts in the field with core teaching provided by dedicated faculty certified by the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers. The faculty provide education to 36 residents, 62 UMMMC attending physicians, 2 fellows and many emergency physicians in the surrounding communities. Research is an important component of academic emergency medicine. The ultrasound faculty at UMMS are national experts and have published extensively in the field. Current research involves soft tissue infection, measuring and tracking blood pressure in sick patients and pain control in hip fractures. The research from UMMS helps to advance the understanding and knowledge of bedside ultrasound.
